Teaching the Next Generation

May 1, 2015 - Kelli Greenberg, Manufacturing QA Engineer

Since its inception in 2007, FIRST Robotics Team 2491 No Mythic has had Minnetronix as a major sponsor. In addition to financial support from both the company and individual employees, several Minnetronix employees give their time to mentor the team through the competition season, teach workshops on industry tools, or build custom computers for the team.

The FIRST organization is centered on students working with professionals to gain experience outside the classroom and to generate excitement about science and technology. Students work on teams to build, wire, program, and test a competition robot. Teams operate like startup businesses and students are responsible for managing budgets and timelines, branding and marketing, and securing sponsors and grants, which enhances written and verbal communication skills.

Exposing students to these real-life experiences opens up the world of science, technology, and engineering. Many students join the team not knowing what they want their career path to look like, but find a fire is lit inside of them. Many follow this passion to college, ready to change the world. Their experience on the team makes it easier for them to get internships, co-ops, and jobs after graduation.

This year, for the first time in its history, the team won at their regional competition, earning a spot at the World Championships. No Mythic competed with some of the best teams from around the world, learned a lot about how to improve the team in the future, and most importantly had a ton of fun.
