Efficient Motor Control for Handheld Surgical Devices

Small three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors are well suited for hand held surgical or dental tools. The careful choice of a motor control method can reduce the heat buildup in the hand held device. In this paper we demonstrate a motor control method that can be used to reduce the temperature of a small hand held device used for arthroscopic surgery and improve the speed response.
