Remote monitoring of medical devices has long been discussed as a means of improving access to patient data. Expanding remote monitoring to include service and maintenance, market analysis, inventory management, and post market surveillance systems can add significant value to the device. This paper discusses methods for designing a system that can be applied to many types of devices and increase the utility of the information supplied to the user.
