Powering ventricular assist devices (VADs) or artificial hearts has always posed challenges because power has to be routed via a percutaneous cable to an implanted device. Transcutaneous energy transmission systems (TETS), or wireless power transfer through the skin, reduces the possibility of infection but has been slow to be adopted because of difficulties meeting technical and safety requirements.
